Nile-Those Whom the Gods Detest

Egyptian technical-themed, death-metal masters "Nile" have always been one of my (if not my) favorite extreme metal acts; ushering in a new, yet ancient sound, format, and style that has always left me wondering exactly what I am listening to.

On November 3rd, (November 6th in Europe) the catacombs will re-open once again, releasing  screams and sirens that are not of this world. Nile's 7th studio album, "Those Whom the Gods Detest", proves to be "Nile's" most complex and experimental release to date; with screaching pitch harmonics, mediterranean influences, heavy groves and breakdowns, all while maintaining "Nile's" signature sound. As with any of "Nile's" lyrical themes, they are always complex and thought provoking. Replete with Egyptian mythology and spells, "Those Whom the Gods Detest" is no exception and includes readings from the Egyptian "Book of the Dead" and the "Necronomicon".

"Nile" let up a bit on the horns and sampling with "Those Whom the Gods Detest", but the arrangements and musicianship are stellar. The title track, "Those Whom the Gods Detest", is this editor's top pic with a blend of everything "Nile" and more. Clocking in at over 8:00 minutes, "Those Whom the Gods Detest" has supersonic speed, melody, and acoustic solos that make it the anthem for this album. The epic "4th Arra of Dagon" is very menacing and simply down right disturbing at times, almost slowing down to a slither, yet as heavy as pyramid blocks. No "Nile" CD would be complete without an instrumental track. "Yezd Desert Ghul Ritual in the Abandoned Towers of Silence" has heavy use of the djembe, with an errie echo effect, accompanied with a Karl Sanders signature speed bağlama solo.

"Those Whom the Gods Detest" is a stong release on several dimensions. Amazing production, composition, musicianship, arrangements, themes, and my favorite release out of their previous six. "Nile" will make the pharaohs return to their flesh with "Those Whom the Gods Detest", so look out!
